Guangyu Dong

Trumpet

A native of Beijing, Guangyu Dong attended secondary school at the Purcell School and esteemed Royal Academy of Music in London. He is currently a teaching assistant at The University of Kansas where he is working on his doctoral degree in trumpet performance. Dong has played his trumpet throughout the world, including a performance at Carnegie Hall with the KU Wind Ensemble. He also performed at Lincoln Center in New York with the DownBeat award-winning KU Jazz Ensemble. Dong has also performed at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle and has traveled twice to perform in Australia. In 2011, Dong won the International Trumpet Guild scholarship competition at the annual conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

At Kansas, Dong is the principal trumpet in the KU Wind Ensemble and has also served as principal trumpet in the school’s symphony. He has been featured as a soloist with various groups and is an active performer and educator throughout the Midwest in the United States. His primary teachers are Steve Leisring, James Watson, and Zhongwei Dai.
