Gilad Hochman is widely considered as an original and innovative voice in the international music scene and one of Israel’s most prominent young composers. He is Israel’s youngest recipient of the Prime Minister’s Prize and winner of various international composition competitions, including the S&R Washington Award.

Born in 1982 to an Odessa-native father and a Paris-native mother, Hochman resides in Berlin since 2007. He started studying the piano at age 6 and to compose at 9. At age 14 he began learning composition under Dr. Ilya Heifets and at 24 he graduated with honors from Tel Aviv University’s music academy.

Hochman was described as “a rising star” by France 24 and his work praised by the BBC, The New York Times and in numerous other publications. The Prime Minister’s Prize committee described him as “a fascinating, original and colorful creator” and Ma’ariv concluded – “Hochman writes with a true artist’s hand.”

Notable performances of his wide-ranging oeuvre by leading musicians include the Berlin Philharmonie orchestral debut in 2013, the London-premiere of “Wanderings” for mandolin and string orchestra in 2014, the Carnegie Hall debut in 2015 and the 2017 ISO’s season opening concert. In addition, Hochman’s “Suspended Reality” was premiered at the German Parliament and played throughout Germany and Israel, including the Alte Oper Frankfurt and Jerusalem Theatre.

Hochman’s music is constantly searching yet presenting a clear aesthetic approach. It uniquely merges classical music traditions with those connected to Jewish music and culture while striving for balance between rational and emotional expressions.
