INTRODUCTION TO IC2016


Hailed by the Financial Times as a festival with a “finely hewn sense of craft," The Intimacy of Creativity returns to Hong Kong 18 April – 21 April, 2016 for its exciting sixth season in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology!

The Intimacy of Creativity is excited to collaborate with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HKPhil) as 2016 IC ensemble-in-residence.  Selected composers will present and revise their orchestral compositions before and after in-depth on-campus Open Discussions between Artistic Director and conductor, Bright Sheng, members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and librarian staff.  The revised compositions will be formally presented at a Preview Concert on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and a World Premiere Concert at the iconic Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall.

Up to three (3) Composer Fellows between the ages of 25 and 35 will be selected to participate. One participating composer may be offered a one-year renewable position at HKUST as Composer-in-Residence/Visiting Scholar in the Division of Humanities for the 2016-17 academic year.

The Intimacy of Creativity 2016 is presented by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in celebration of the 25th anniversary of HKUST, in collaboration with HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science and Institute for Advanced Study, as part of the HKUST Music Alive! concert series. The IC2016 media partner is Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK).  The Intimacy of Creativity is generously supported by Dr. and Mrs. Helmut Sohmen in Memory of Sir Yue-Kong Pao CBE JP.

被金融時報譽為“精雕細琢”的創意間的親暱迎來第六樂季,將於2016年4月18日至21日在香港再次舉辦并慶祝香港科技大學建校二十五週年。

香港管絃樂團為2016年的駐校樂團。受邀的作曲家們將在科大校園內與藝術總監及指揮盛宗亮,香港管絃樂團樂手們一起深入研究討論及排練他們的管絃樂作品。修改後的作品在香港科技大學預演後,將正式在城市中心著名的香港文化中心首演。

最多將有三位年約25至35歲的作曲家獲選參與本聚會。並將有一位有可能在2016-2017學年間受聘於香港科技大學人文學部,為駐校作曲家及講師,任期為一年可續。

「創意間的親暱」2016由香港科技大學主辦,與科大人文社會科學學院及高等研究院合作,以慶祝香港科技大學25年週年校慶, 同時也是「科大 Music Alive!」音樂會系列的一部分。香港電台為其媒體合作夥伴。「創意間的親暱」由蘇海文伉儷紀念包玉剛爵士慷慨贊助。

Eligibility and Guidelines

  1. Up to three (3) Composer Fellows will be selected to participate in four days of Open Discussions, a Preview Concert, and World Premiere Concert of their work.
  2. Composers applying for the Partnership must be between the ages of 25 and 35 at the time of application deadline
  3. Selected Composer Fellows MUST be willing to work with Bright Sheng and HKPhil librarian to make necessary revisions to their score and parts BEFORE events begin
  4. Selected Composer Fellows MUST also be comfortable working with Bright Sheng, members of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and librarian staff DURING PUBLIC, OPEN DISCUSSIONS to make additional necessary revisions to score and parts before the final public concert presentations
  5. Round-trip airfare, accommodation, and a per diem will be provided to selected Composer Fellows

Composer-in-Residence/Visiting Scholar

  1. One Composer Fellow may be offered a one-year position at HKUST as Composer-in-Residence/Visiting Scholar in the Division of Humanities for the 2016-17 academic year.

Submissions

  1. Each composer may submit up to two (2) orchestral compositions for consideration, but only ONE work from each composer will be selected and presented
  2. Each submitted work must not have previously been performed by a professional orchestra
  3. Maximum instrumentation of each work submitted is as follows: 3 flutes, 3 oboes, 3 clarinets and 3 bassoons (piccolo, cor anglais, bass clarinet and contrabassoon are available as doubled instruments); 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones (two tenor and one bass trombone) and 1 tuba; timpani, 3 percussion players, harp, piano (doubling celesta); and strings
  4. Works for string orchestra WILL BE ACCEPTED
  5. Works with soloist(s) WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
  6. Works for symphonic band WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
  7. Each work submitted should be no longer than 10 minutes in duration
  8. Past IC Composer Fellows are ineligible to apply
  9. All submissions will be reviewed by a First Round Selection Panel, including noted musicians from Hong Kong; Final Round Selection will be made in consultation with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra
  10. Composers are asked to submit the following via the online submission form below by the receipt deadline:
    1. Legible, professionally-prepared score for each work submitted (PDF format only)
    2. Though not necessary, the composer may also send accompanying performance or MIDI recordings of the submitted works if available (MP3 format only)
    3. CV, including date of birth and names and contact information (only) for two (2) professional references (PDF format only)
    4. Program note in English (and Chinese, if available) for each work submitted – 150 word/300 Chinese character maximum
    5. Biography in English (and Chinese, if available) – 200 word/400 Chinese character maximum
    6. High resolution color headshot (at least 1MB in size)

Timeline

  1. 11:59PM (Hong Kong Time) 2 October, 2015 (Friday): Deadline to submit e-application via form below
  2. Dec, 2015: Notification of selected Composer Fellows and phone consultation with Bright Sheng on necessary revisions to selected works
  3. 1 Feb, 2016: Deadline to submit final revised score and one (1) final sample woodwind, brass, percussion, and string part for REVIEW AND APPROVAL by Bright Sheng and HKPhil librarian
  4. 22 Feb, 2016: Deadline to submit final, complete set of parts in PDF format on A4 size paper (via e-mail)
  5. 18-19 April, 2016: Open Discussions of selected works on the campus of HKUST
  6. 20 April, 2016: Preview Concert on the campus of HKUST
  7. 21 April, 2016: World Premiere Concert, Hong Kong Cultural Centre Concert Hall

IC2016作品徵選要點

資格和要點

  1. 最多三位作曲家將獲選參與為期四日的公開討論、預演、及世界首演音樂會。
  2. 作品提交截止日期前申請人年齡需介於25至35歲。
  3. 獲選作曲家必須願意與盛宗亮和香港管絃樂團樂手, 樂務等合作並在活動之前對其作品做出必要修改。
  4. 獲選作曲家必須願意與盛宗亮,香港管絃樂團樂手在活動中討論其作品,並在正式演出之前做必要修改。
  5. 獲選作曲家將獲來回機票、住宿及伙食津貼。

駐校作曲家/訪問學人

  1. 一位作曲家有可能在2016-2017學年間受聘於香港科技大學人文學部,為駐校作曲家或訪問學人

遞交方法

  1. 每位作曲家最多可遞交兩首管絃樂作品,但只有其中一首將被入選。
  2. 提交作品需未曾被任何專業管絃樂團演出過
  3. 每首提交作品各樂器最多使用數量如下:3支長笛,3支雙簧管,3支單簧管以及3支巴松管(短笛,英國管,低音單簧管及低音巴松管可作為替補樂器);4支法國號,3支小號,3支長號(2支男高音及1支低音長號)以及大號;定音鼓,3位敲擊樂手,豎琴,鋼琴(鋼片琴);及弦樂隊
  4. 絃樂團作品將被接納
  5. 有獨奏者作品將不被接納
  6. 管樂團作品將不被接納
  7. 每首作品不長於10分鐘
  8. 過往參與過「創意間的親暱」的作曲家將不被接納
  9. A所有提交的作品均會由首輪遴選小組挑選,小組包括香港著名音樂家;最後會跟香港交響樂團磋商挑選最終獲選作品
  10. 作曲家請在截止日期前於網上遞交以申請資料:
    1. 每首遞交的作品,必須是清晰以及專業準備好的總譜(只限PDF格式
    2. 若有作品演出或MIDI錄音,亦可附上 (只限MP3格式)
    3. 一份個人簡歷,其中註明出生年月日及兩位推薦人的姓名及聯絡方式(只限PDF格式)
    4. 每首作品的英文(及中文,如有)作品簡介 - 最多150字/中文字300個
    5. 英文(及中文,如有)個人簡介 - 最多200字/中文字400個
    6. 高解像度的彩色頭像照片(至少1MB大小)

時間表

  1. 11:59PM (香港時間) 十月二日 2015 (星期五)網上報名截止日期
  2. 十二月 2015:獲選作曲家將獲通知以及盛宗亮將會以電話形式進行對作品修改的磋商
  3. 二月一日, 2016:遞交經過修改的總譜及木管,銅管,敲擊樂,及弦樂的分譜各一份,以供盛宗亮及香港交響樂團館員檢查及核准
  4. 二月二十二日, 2016:以PDF格式,A4大小,經電郵形式遞交所有分譜
  5. 四月1819日, 2016於香港科技大學進行公開排練
  6. 四月二十日, 2016:預演音樂會,於香港科技大學
  7. 四月二十一日, 2016 世界首演音樂會,於香港文化中心
