Scott Ordway (b. 1984, Santa Cruz, CA) is a composer, conductor, and member of the faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He earned his Ph.D. in 2013 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he received the Hilda K. Nitzche and David Halstead Prizes in composition.
Recent work has been hailed as "an American response to Sibelius" (The Boston Globe), "a welcome austere moment" (The Portland Press Herald) and "wild and distant" (Boston Classical Review). Describing a performance of the Kyrie from the evening-length Festival Mass, the New Maine Times wrote that "[it] blew us away... a wall of sound", and NewMusicBox has praised the music's "clean clarity, as cold as ice."
Ordway's music is presented throughout the United States and internationally. Past seasons include performances at the Aspen Summer Music Festival, Oregon Bach Festival, Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and Freie Universität (Berlin), the Accademia Chigiana (Siena), Portland Chamber Music Festival, and June in Buffalo, as well as ensemble performances by Norbotten NEO (Sweden), So Percussion (NYC), Boston Music Viva, SOLI Chamber Ensemble (San Antonio), Lorelei Ensemble (Boston), and the Momenta, Arneis, Daedalus, and DTQ string quartets.
Prior to joining the faculty at Curtis, Ordway was Visiting Assistant Professor of Music at Bates College.
