INTRODUCTION TO IC2014

Hailed by the Financial Times as the "city's most innovative musical experience," The Intimacy of Creativity returns to Hong Kong 21 April – 4 May, 2014 for its exciting fourth season!
Selected composers will present and revise their chamber music compositions after in-depth discussions between composers and performers during on-campus Open Discussions. The revised compositions will be formally presented at Preview Concerts at the Tsang Shiu Tim Art Hall on the campus of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and World Premiere Concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre.
Artistic Director and internationally-renowned composer, conductor, and pianist, Bright Sheng, will be joined by Distinguished Guest Artist, renowned cellist, and Rostropovich International Competition Winner, Gary Hoffman; Distinguished Guest Composer/Artist and Artistic Director of the American Composers Orchestra, Derek Bermel; Distinguished Guest Composer and Vice President of the Central Conservatory of Music, Ye Xiaogang; Special Guest Artist, internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Zhu Dan; and Ensemble-in-Residence, the New Fromm Players of Tanglewood Music Center; along with other Guest Artists.
Up to six Composer Fellows between the ages of 25 and 35 will be selected to participate. One or two participating composers may be offered a one-year renewable position at HKUST as Composer-in-Residence/Visiting Scholar in the Division of Humanities.
In addition, the work of one Composer Fellow will be selected through audience vote at the IC2014 World Premiere Concerts to be presented during the 2015 Fifth Anniversary Season of The Intimacy of Creativity.
The Intimacy of Creativity 2014 is presented by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with HKUST School of Humanities and Social Science and Institute for Advanced Study, as part of the HKUST Music Alive! concert series. The IC2014 media partner is Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK). Venue and ticketing sponsorship is provided by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD).

IC2014 CALL FOR SCORES GUIDELINES

Eligibility
Up to six (6) Composer Fellows between the age of 25 and 35 will be selected to participate in two weeks of Open Discussions, Preview Concerts, and World Premiere Concerts of their work. Round-trip airfare, accommodations and a per diem will be provided to the composers by the Partnership. Composers applying for the Partnership MUST be comfortable having their compositions discussed and be willing to make necessary revisions before the final public concert presentations.
Composers-in-Residence/Audience Vote
One or two participating Composer Fellows may be offered a one-year renewable position at HKUST as Composer-in-Residence/Visiting Scholar in the Division of Humanities for the 2014-2015 academic year.
In addition, the work of one Composer Fellow will be selected through audience vote at the IC2014 World Premiere Concerts to be presented during the 2015 Fifth Anniversary Season of The Intimacy of Creativity.
Submissions
  1. Each composer may submit up to three (3) chamber music compositions for consideration, but only ONE work from each composer will be selected and presented
  2. Each work submitted should be 8-10 minutes in duration, for 2-5 performers drawn from the following instrumentation: clarinet (no bass clarinet), string quartet (or any subset thereof), and piano
  3. Solo works will NOT be accepted
  4. Composers are asked to apply via the online submission form below by the receipt deadline
  5. It is HIGHLY ENCOURAGED that composers submit the following supporting materials via online file-sharing service (www.dropbox.com is recommended) to info@ic.shss.ust.hk; however, composers MAY submit hard copies to the contact address below:
    1. Score AND a set of professionally prepared parts for each work submitted (PDF format only, if submitted electronically)
    2. A CV, including date of birth and names and contact information for two (2) professional references (PDF format only, if submitted electronically)
    3. Though not necessary, the composer may also send accompanying performance recordings of the submitted works (MP3 format only, if submitted electronically)
  6. If submitting supporting materials electronically via online service, please e-mail a link to ONE FOLDER including scores, parts, recordings (if applicable) and CV to info@ic.shss.ust.hk with materials labeled as follows:
