Eli Marshall is Visiting Scholar and Composer-in-Residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He studied music at Bard College, the Yale School of Music, the Curtis Institute, and the Hamburg Hochschule für Musik und Theater. In 2011, he lectured at the Witten/Herdecke University (Germany).

He was Fulbright Fellow to Beijing (2003-04) and co-founded the Beijing New Music Ensemble in 2005; as artistic director, he produced performances throughout Asia, a BBC broadcast, and a CD of works by Zhou Long and Chen Yi (NAXOS). He was special consultant to the Beijing Modern Festival at the Central Conservatory.

His cantata Unde Pendet Aeternitas was premiered by Warren Mok, tenor, and the Macao Orchestra, winning the 2007 Leo Kaplan Award from ASCAP. As a Douglas Moore Fellow (2008-09), he was resident at the Chicago Lyric, Metropolitan, and Seattle Opera companies.

His works were premiered in Gak-won Sa (a major Buddhist temple in Korea), the German Reichstag, and the Smithsonian Institution, which featured his music for six months with a Mei-ling Hom installation. His score with Wu Tong for Wong Kar-wai's 2008 film Ashes of Time – Redux was released as an album on SONY CLASSICAL with soloist Yoyo Ma.
