Emma-Ruth's music has been described as "bold, imaginative and inventive" (RNCM), "highly charged and beautiful" (Opera North, Bachtrack). She came to critical attention with Bleared Smeared Shod in the finals of the BBC Radio 3/ NCEM Tallis Scholars competition in 2010; her choral piece is currently being recorded by The Ebor Singers for the Boreas Music label.

Emma-Ruth studied for her BMus and BMus at Cardiff University and is currently completing her PhD at the Royal Northern College of Music. She has studied privately with Alexander Goehr, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, HK Gruber, Judith Weir, and Arlene Sierra; been in masterclasses with Pierre Boulez, Henri Dutilleux, Simon Bainbridge, Julian Anderson, James MacMillan, Frederic Rzewski and Howard Skempton.

Emma-Ruth's music is performed by orchestras, ensembles and soloists including Opera North, London Philharmonia, BBC NOW Chamber Players, Manchester Camerata, Håkan Hardenberger, Colin Currie, Tempest Flute Trio, Rhodes Piano Trio, Ebor Singers, Navarra Quartet, Royal Northern New Ensemble, HM Royal Marines Windband, Absolution Saxophone Quartet and Schubert Ensemble. She is a Royal Northern Gold Medal composer and a featured artist in various festivals including Music of Today 2009, James MacMillan 2009, RNCM Chamberfest 2011, Sounds New Canterbury 2010, HCMF 2011 and North West 2012.

Emma-Ruth is an associate member of the LSO's soundhub initiative and the composer in residence with Milton Keynes City Orchestra. She is co-directing the North West Collectives and Curiosities Composer Collective; taking her opera on tour with Heritage Opera; working at the Sonic Arts Research Centre at Belfast University / facilitating workshops for the Belfast Children's Festival 2012 whilst on the Chetham's International School faculty.
